PUBG Corp Suing NetEase Over Copyright Infringement

PUBG Corp, the owner and developer of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, has filed a lawsuit against NetEase, the Chinese publisher of two mobile games that are similar to PUBG.

According to Ars Technica, the suit, in which the complaints are summarized as “a copyrightable audio-visual work, individually and/or in combination with other elements of Battlegrounds”, was filed in Northern California’s US District Court and refers to mobile-only games Rules of Survival and Knives Out, both of which have been out on mobile before PUBG.

There are similarities as both feature 100-person online battles and a shrinking safe zone located on a small island.

Much like PUBG, the games also feature military-grade weapons, armor, and vehicles.

PUBG Corp is seeking damages from NetEase and requesting that both games are removed from online stores.

PUBG Corp lists a total 25 aspects of the game which it believes to be copyrightable and include what they consider to be PUBG-specific such as a shrinking safe zone, and players dropping into game action via parachutes, among others.
