Streamers Criticize Burger King for Twitch Donation Ads

Burger King

An advertising agency representing Burger King took some justified heat from twitch streamers for running ads during Twitch donations which didn’t violate any rules, but wasn’t exactly endearing to audiences.

The agency leveraged a popular feature offered by Streamlabs which allows viewers to donate to Twitch channels in exchange for having a personalized message read out by a text-to-speech plugin.

Essentially, by donating a minimum of $1, an automated voice will read out their typed message during the live stream, allowing for a new form of engagement, which Streamlabs says “can increase audience engagement and encourage users to send in additional donations to hear their message played out loud.”

Streamers weren’t happy about the company butting into their monetization tools in such an intrusive manner.

According to PC Gamer, the ads were actually in violation of Streamlabs’ terms of service which states “using the site for commercial or promotional purposes,” which includes displaying unauthorized commercial advertisements and “attempting to post messages or advertisements with a commercial purpose.”
