Published

on

Players of the Neverwinter MMORPG are familiar with the offerings of Faerun, but now they will have the opportunity to venture into another of Dungeons and Dragons’ popular worlds.

Arc Games announced the latest module for Neverwinter, which will be set in Ravenloft.

Below is the information from Arc Games

Greetings Adventurers!

On June 26, prepare to walk through the gates of Barovia and into the mists with the newest Neverwinter release set in Ravenloft! This module includes an all-new Campaign, the Barovia adventure zone, the new Castle Ravenloft Epic Dungeon, updated Hunts, and more!

In Ravenloft you will have the chance to travel to Demiplane of Dread with some special assistance from the Vistani. Your mission to rid the land of Barovia of its curse will lead you to encounters with all manner of horrors and creatures, including a new Monster Hunt mechanic! Night and Day will also play a meaningful part in your adventures, much like this cycle does to the creatures of this land. You will also come face to face with the vampire Strahd von Zarovich himself in Castle Ravenloft!

Over the next few weeks we will be sharing in-depth Developer Blogs so stay tuned for more. The mists await…

Ravenloft started a module for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Second Edition, written by Tracy and Laura Hickman, who were architects of the Dragonlance modules. The module grew in popularity and later became a campaign setting. While most Dungeons and Dragons settings are based in high fantasy, Ravenloft includes elements of horror and gothic.

As Dungeons and Dragons continued to progress with each new edition, materials for Ravenloft were produced. In 2016, A new adventure, Curse of Strahd, was released for DND’s fifth edition, with development by the Wizards of the Coast team, and story contributions by the Hickmans.

The mascot of Ravenloft is the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich. Below is his biography from the Ravenloft Wikipedia Page

Strahd Von Zarovich was allegedly the first Vampire and the dark lord of Barovia.

After fighting a series of wars, he retired to the valley of Barovia and had a fortress named Castle Ravenloft built, after which his brother Sergei came to live with him. Strahd’s beloved Tatyana was in love with Sergei, so Strahd made a dark bargain with one of the powers in the Amber Temple. Strahd killed Sergei and Tatyana threw herself off Ravenloft’s overlook. Strahd was then cursed by his parents in the form that he would always be trapped in Barovia and not even death would relieve him of his curse. His guards turned on him and shot him with their arrows but he did not die, he became a vampire, the first vampire.

Strahd is one of the NPCs associated with the campaign setting, akin to characters like Elminster of Shadowdale (Forgotten Realms) and Mordekinenen (Greyhawk).

Ravenloft is different from the previous expansions and modules in that it includes new elements from a campaign setting different than the Forgotten Realms and Eberron campaign settings.

It’s a good campaign setting to introduce to players who want to try DND but they are not really into high fantasy. On the flipside, players who have been playing Dungeons and Dragons for a long time can embark in Ravenloft and find something different for them.

Although no details have been revealed about the Ravenloft module, players should expect to come up against the most horrible creatures in the DND bestiary. As for Strahd, players could end up facing him or aiding him in some fashion.
