Study Shows Belgium Ban on In-Game Loot Boxes Going Uninforced

A new study shows that Belgium’s ban on in-game loot boxes, which initially surfaced in 2018 from the Belgian Gaming Commission, has not been enforced, according to loot box researcher Leon Y. Xiao.

Per the study, among the 100 highest-grossing Belgian iPhone games during May 2021, 82% had loot box features, going on to say that the policy has given consumers, parents, and policymakers “a false sense of security.”

The report states that the law isn’t working and needs to be readdressed.
