Google has struggled in it’s efforts to compete in the podcast streaming market with their Google Podcasts app, which has seemingly disappeared from search results within Google Play, which allowed users to hit a ‘play’ button on related search results.
Google has confirmed that its podcasting app not showing up in search results is “working as intended” which indicates that the company is likely pivoting from their efforts to create a standalone podcasting experience, similar to competitors such as Spotify and Apple Music.
With YouTube reportedly looking to get deeper in the podcast game, Google Podcasts would have likely been buried further down the industry funnel.
With the growing popularity of sports talk podcasts on YouTube, Google may be looking to shift their efforts in that direction. Even niche topic content, such as paranormal podcasts and horror podcasts are seeing more and more popularity across social media, indicating a clear demand for more podcast content.
