Ziff Davis, a digital media and internet company, is acquiring CNET from Red Ventures for “more than $100 million” which is a fraction of the $1.8 billion that it was valuated at when CBS acquired the company back in 2008.
According to the New York Times, Ziff Davis’ chief executive, Vivek Shah, officially confirmed the acquisition as Ziff Davis adds to it’s already impressive portfolio of tech publications that includes brand such as Mashable, IGN, and Lifehacker.
Shah acquired CNET because it’s a “well-known industry brand” and believes that it still has an audience that’s large enough to be attractive to potential tech advertisers.
“I have a very clear and optimistic view on content,” Shah said, per the article.
CNET has gone through a number of image issues recently, including investigations that showed that CNET was using generative AI to produce some of their articles, investigations conducted by The Verge and Futurism in 2023.
