Sesame Workshop Writers have been threatening a strike for some time, but it appears that will all now be avoided thanks to the writers having ratified a new five-year labor contract, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The new deal is being classified by the union president as “groundbreaking” as 28 out of the group of 35 writers voted to support the tentative agreement that was reached back on April 19th, with the remaining abstaining from voting.
WGA East president Lisa Takeuchi Cullen released an official statement sating that the new deal contains “groundbreaking protections.”
Cullen added that “Make no mistake — these historic gains mark an important step in organizing animation. Writing for children’s media and animation isn’t easier than other forms of screenwriting, and those workers deserve the same protections.”
As part of the new deal, minimum wage rates by 3.5 percent in the first year of the contract and 3 percent in the second year and expands work that is covered under the union contract to include writing for all projects distributed on SVOD platforms, animated titles and works, educational programs, and new media videos that are shared on TikTok and YouTube platforms as well.
